Physical Activity—Benefits

Physical activity is a body movement of muscles that results in energy expenditure (Pate, Prat etal. , 1995)

The great debate about physical activity has shown health benefits even small increases in activity can have beneficial effects for health.

Reduced chronic disease risk:

4  Hypertension

4   Type 2 diabetes

4   High blood lipids

4   Cardiovascular disease

4   Obesity                               

According to Liane M. Summerfield “a pattern of inactivity begins early in life, making the need for physical activity necessary among our children.” 

The benefits of early physical activity for children may have some significant advantages for today’s youth.

  Lowered Risk of colon cancer

    Increase in bone density

     Reduction of anxiety image and mood

     Development of physical fitness

      Promotion of weight control

According to current recommendations _____minutes is the guideline.  This activity should be of moderate intensity.  An alternative approach might be 5 to 10 minutes of activity could be just as beneficial if the total accumulation is at least 30 minutes for teens and adolescents and 60 minutes for children.

Increased regular physical activity has shown benefits for children as well as adults.

Activity includes: swimming, running, brisk walking, climbing stairs, biking, participating in sports and games and physical education.  Working in the home and yard and garden may also contribute to the accumulated physical activity.
